A Different World Is Now On Netflix!

Yes, you read that correctly! All six seasons of A Different World is currently available for your streaming pleasure on Netflix. After years of calling for the return of one of the most iconic Black shows in television history, you can now revel in the authentic goodness of Black youth.

The brainchild of Debbie Allen, A Different World was a spin-off of the popular The Cosby Show. Initially, the show was centered on the second eldest Huxtable daughter Denise, a role played by the gorgeous Lisa Bonet. However, after a fallout with Bill Cosby, Bonet abruptly left the show, and the series quickly pivoted to focus on a diverse cohort of Black students at the fictional Hillman University.

The show is accredited for popularizing HBCUs, and expanding the dynamic image of middle-class Black youth. The show is also known for tackling then-controversial subjects — like racism, sex, HIV/AIDS epidemic, and abortion to name a few — that other run-of-the-mill sitcoms avoided at the time.

Recently, creator Debbie Allen remarked that a remake is unlikely, but possible. But, for now, enjoy the genuine goodness of a show that honestly is the pinnacle of fantastic Black television.

  1. So glad I’ve been able to share this series with my kids. We’ve been binge watching. Some episodes are out of order, mostly it’s ok, but the Series Finale is shown much earlier than it is supposed to have been in the que.

  2. Love the Show! Love Ms. Allen, but she was not the creator. She was the producer and director from about the 3rd season on, basically, when it got good! LOL
